Tips For Cleaning Your Socks

When it comes to cleaning your socks, people typically just toss them in with the rest of their laundry on laundry day. No special treatment. Just a standard machine wash. Once that’s done, you throw them in the dryer with everything else and call it a day.

Is that how you would treat a nice cashmere sweater or a high-end article of clothing? Most likely you’ll baby those garments to make sure you can keep them in great shape. Why not do the same for your socks?

Socks are typically one of the main staples to your everyday outfit. You wear them to protect your feet in your shoes. You’ll keep them on when your feet are cold or to keep your feet dry. You’ll wear them to stop your feet from sweating and stinking up your shoes. Socks are arguably one of the most important pieces in your wardrobe. All you need to hand wash your socks to keep them in tiptop shape is:

  • Sink
  • Water
  • Mild Detergent

Choose the sink for the best and gentlest method for cleaning your socks. As long as your sink has running water and can have the drain plugged, you’re in good shape!

The next step will be filling your sink up with some cold water and adding some mild detergent. You can go with a gentle laundry detergent or even a mild dish soap that you use on your dishes.

While the water is filling up you can prep your socks. It’s best to turn the socks inside out before you’re washing them. Having them inside out helps maintain the integrity of the outer fabric. It will also give you a deeper clean since that’s the side the bacteria from your clings to. This helps make sure you really get the odor out.

Now you’re prepped and ready to start cleaning your socks. You’ll want to soak the socks for at least 5 minutes in the water to allow the dirty to lift off the socks. You may need to add some time to soaking for any extra dirty socks. A 30-minute soak can typically do the trick.

Consider treating stains on any socks before you toss them in the water. Adding a little dish soap and gently rubbing it in with an old toothbrush will do wonders for your stains. You can use this trick for other clothes as well.

Move the socks around in the water a bit and rub them between your hands to help knock loose any dirt still clinging to the sock. Go ahead and drain the sink once you’re satisfied with the level of clean you’ve achieved for your socks. It’s a good idea to run the socks under cold water before you set them out to try to get rid of any soap still on the sock.

All that’s left to do now is dry your socks! This part is pretty simple. Consider hang or air drying your socks if you don’t need them right away. This will help protect the sock material from heat.

Try to get as much water out of the sock as possible before leaving to dry to speed up the process. Consider wrapping your socks up in a towel and applying pressure to transfer the water to the towel. All you have to do next is lay the socks flat or pin them to the clothesline and let them air dry.

Once you have the system down pat it won’t feel so tedious to hand wash your socks. You’ll be happy you didn’t throw them in the washer and dryer when you realize how much more life you’ve been able to get out of those socks.
